Optimizing your website for SEO is essential, but if you’ve ever found yourself battling with your SEO plugin, you’re not alone. Tools like RankMath or Yoast are helpful, but they can sometimes lead you astray—especially when you know your content is perfect for your audience, but the plugin keeps throwing up warnings.

When SEO Tools Make You Doubt Your Content

It’s incredibly frustrating to have a page, product, or post that you know is just right:

  • The wording feels spot-on.
  • It’s perfectly pitched to your audience.
  • The length feels ideal—not too long, not too short.

But then your SEO plugin insists:
❌ “Your title needs a power word!”
❌ “Your content is too short; aim for 600 words!”
❌ “Your URL is too long; make it shorter!”

These suggestions often feel counterintuitive, especially if you’re confident in your understanding of your audience’s needs.

Common Fixes That Don’t Actually Help

To satisfy the plugin’s demands, you might:

  • Add repetitive copy you’ve already used on other pages or products, which dilutes your content.
  • Use filler words to meet arbitrary word count requirements, compromising the readability of your post.
  • Shorten URLs in ways that don’t feel natural or intuitive, sacrificing clarity for the sake of a green tick.

Why These Fixes Hurt More Than They Help

SEO is about creating useful, engaging content for users, not robots. Search engines like Google are increasingly sophisticated—they look beyond plugin scores to evaluate how well your content meets user intent.

When you compromise your instincts and your audience’s needs to chase plugin perfection, you might:

  • Make your content less appealing or clear to your audience.
  • Harm your user experience by prioritizing arbitrary rules over readability and usefulness.
  • Miss the chance to build trust and engagement with your customers.

Remember: users aren’t robots, and they don’t care if your blog is exactly 600 words or your URL is 10 characters shorter. What matters is whether your content helps them solve their problems or answers their questions.

When to Ignore SEO Plugins (And Be Confident in Your Content)

On some of our websites, we even turn off RankMath’s readability suggestions—especially when they start flagging things we know are fine. Seeing yellow or red warnings when you’re confident you’re in the green can be distracting and counterproductive.

Here’s what we recommend:

  1. Trust Your Knowledge of Your Audience
You know your customers better than any plugin. If your instincts tell you that a title works or that a shorter blog is perfect for your audience, trust that.
  2. Focus on User Intent
Create content that helps your audience, not content that ticks boxes. If your customers need concise product descriptions or detailed how-to guides, deliver what they need.
  3. Strike a Balance
Use SEO plugins as tools, not rules. Incorporate their suggestions when they make sense, but don’t let them override your better judgment.

When to Turn Off SEO Suggestions

If your SEO plugin becomes a distraction or pushes you toward unnecessary changes, consider turning off certain features:

  • Readability Suggestions: These are often subjective and can conflict with your brand’s tone or style.
  • Word Count Requirements: Not every piece of content needs to hit 600 words. Focus on being concise and useful.
  • URL Length Warnings: If your URL is clear and descriptive, that’s more important than fitting it into a character limit.

Be Confident in Your Content

At the end of the day, SEO tools are just that—tools. They’re here to help, not dictate your strategy. If you’ve done your research, understand your audience, and create valuable content, you’re already ahead. Remember:

SEO evaluates usefulness for users, not robots.
Content that helps your audience will always perform better.
You know your customers better than any plugin.

A Smarter SEO Approach

Instead of obsessing over plugin scores, focus on the bigger picture:

  • Conduct proper keyword research to target terms your audience is actually searching for.
  • Write content that solves problems and answers questions.
  • Monitor performance over time to see what’s working and adjust your strategy accordingly.
